Fresh Fish Almost to the Table

Yksi, kai hopea karppi hyppäsi suoraan takakannelle. En kuitenkaan alkanut paistamaan vaan heitin takaisin jokeen.

Fresh fish almost to the table

Approximately almost all carp here are called Asian Carp. I guess that's where they all are from originally. Illinois River was pretty much literally full of carp. The first time I hit a school of carp, I thought that at least the propeller shaft was broken. The sound was as if someone had beaten the bottom of the ship with baseball bats.

One of them, I guess a silver carp, jumped directly to the aft deck. However, I didn't start to fry it, but I threw it back into the river.

Coat of Arms Birds Visiting

Vaakunalintuja vieraisilla

When I woke up behind Dead Man's Island, I noticed that the bald headed eagles had come to see who in the heck is lying at anchor there.

Every single time the sun rises in the morning and the sun sets in the evening is a wonderful experience.  I feel that I will never grow tired of watching it.  The same during the nights when I am miles away from artificial lights, the sky with stars makes me wonder every time.

New Phenomenom

This was the second morning when there was so much fog that I didn't even think to fire the engine.  I could easily drive using only gauges and stay in the channel but those huge tow boats move silently like a ghost.  The radar would see them but it could hardly see floating debris like old dead trees, etc.

You Start to Look Serious When....

Vetää ilmeen vakavaksi

Olen seonnut laskuissani kuinka monen sulun läpi olen jo kulkenut. Kyllä niitä jo on kymmeniä. This is Sisteen Tons northbound - over; aina siihen asti kun viimeinen viesti lähtee: lockmaster thank you, have a safe day hopefully no more foreigners today.

Vaikka Sixteen Tons onkin 22,000 lbs laiva sisään sulkuun virtaava vesi kyllä haluaa pyörittää sitä kuin lastua laineella. Yleensä veneissä on useampi henkilö jolloin yksi kiinnittää veneen keulasta ja toinen perästä kelluvaan pollariin. Minun täytyy luottaa keskikiinnitykseen ja pitää venen paikallaan keula- ja peräpotkurilla.

I can't any longer count how many locks I have already passed.  There must be tens.  In spite of that, I have to admit that I feel excited from the moment when I pick up the microphone and call the lock, "Newport Lock, Newport Lock, this is Sixteen Tons northbound - over."  Up to the moment when the last message goes, "Lock master, thank you, have a safe day.  Hopefully no more foreigners today."

Even though Sixteen Tons is 22,000 pounds ship the incoming water wants to make it go around like a toy boat.  Usually there are more people on board and while one secures the boat from the bow and the other at the stern to the floating mooring post.  I have to secure the middle of the boat and keep the boat in one place using the bow and stern thrusters.

You Have to Eat or You Die

Eta bör man eller dör man

Yksi erittäin tärkeä viihtyvyyteen näinkin pitkällä matkalla vaikuttava asia on ruokailu.

One thing that comforts you during such a long journey is to have good food.  I think Americans call it, "comfort food" or "home cooking".  Luckily I prepared food willingly and luckily Michelle planned everything very thoroughly (as I have several times said).  September 4th dinner was chicken breast fried in olive oil with peppers and lemon pepper seasoning, potato salad, and four bean salad, Ikea's crisp rye bread with mayo and cheese, my usual wine of fresh water, as a dessert Townhouse crackers with peanut butter and strawberry jam, and as an exception, one cup of Ikea coffee.

When the temperature during this four weeks has been without exception near or over 90 degrees F, I don't like to fry or cook in galley but outside with my Coleman gas grill.

Detour Up the Ohio River

Mutka matkassa...

Kuvassa Christelle ja Gary seka laivansa Time & Tide Paducha KY.

This is a picture of Christelle and Gary and their boat Time & Tide in Paducah, KY.  Their cats didn't want to be in the picture.  This is the beginning of 900 additional miles to my Great Loop journey.  When I pop in Warsaw, KY where my boat will be made better before the rest of 5,000 miles.  It feels melancholy that Time & Tide leaves for Cumberland River and I continue up the Ohio River.  It was extremely useful to travel with these second time Loopers.  I learned easily several important things as to safety; things that can be only in practice with someone of experience.
